YMCA Week June 6-13

2 June 2016

YMCAs throughout the world will be celebrating Founder’s day on June 6 when they remember George Williams who founded the YMCA in 1844. Today the YMCA works in 119 countries and with an estimated 58 million users In Ireland the YMCA works in 20 communities in both parts of the island and its services are used by 26,000 young people each year.

Young people from the YMCA in Ireland have recently taken part in a major global survey of the views and experiences of young people from over 60 countries as part of the One Million Voices initiative. In Ireland 330 young people from both sides of the border were interviewed. Over 52% of respondents were female which in itself dispels the myth that the YMCA only works with young me! . Another common misconception that the survey helped to redress is that the YMCA only works with young people from a faith background with nearly 4 out of 10 saying that they didn’t come from a faith background. When asked for their views on the YMCA itself, over 9 out of 10 said that they viewed the YMCA as “youth friendly” and nearly 8 out of 10 said that they felt that they had a say in how its programmes and services were designed and delivered.
